Within myON, Renaissance uses the CEFR framework to level the texts to support both students and teachers in understanding the challenge level of the books as they relate to the A1-C2 framework. Unlike texts written specifically for the CEFR framework, myON books are authentic texts that have been digitised, providing users with a true reading experience and exposure to real-world vocabulary – a first in education.

myON authentic books evaluated for CEFR levels benefit students learning English as an additional language (EAL) by:

  • Exposing them to real-world language beyond the classroom and textbook
  • Providing opportunities to engage with authentic text at the right CEFR level
  • Facilitating comprehension by ensuring vocabulary, verb tenses, and grammatical complexity are within the student’s language ability
  • Supporting all four language domains—listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Personalised Learning

Students who read authentic texts at the correct level enjoy reading more. With CEFR levels in myON, users can:

  • Browse and filter by CEFR level, exploring the range of titles and the topics they fall into. Steps on browsing by CEFR levels can be found here.
  • Additional ATOS filters allow users to filter books further by using their Star Reading ZPD to support readability and comprehension.

Note: The titles you have access to will depend on your myON subscription.

Utilising the expertise of language acquisition experts and technology:

Authentic texts

Renaissance has levelled over 6,000 enhanced digital books, and these are already available for you to use. Steps to turn on CEFR levels on your site can be found here.

Aligned with the science of reading

The Renaissance CEFR level reflects a detailed analysis of the vocabulary, verb tenses, and sentence structure of every book, assigning an overall CEFR level based on the highest of these three.

Support EAL students on their journey towards language proficiency

myON’s authentic texts have the advantage that students will be introduced to the rules of English in the same way as their own primary language while practising at the right level for their individual needs.

Resources designed to help deliver meaningful results:

What is Common European Framework of Reference for Languages?

The CEFR is a framework, published by the Council of Europe in 2001, which describes language learners’ ability in terms of speaking, reading, listening and writing at six reference levels. Within myON, Renaissance uses the CEFR framework to level the texts to support both students and educators in understanding the challenge level of the books as they relate to the A1-C2 framework.

What do educators around the world think?

We very much like the graphs at the end of the reports, which tell us the children who are meeting or exceeding their reading level and those children who are a concern and it's been able to allow us to monitor the progress between those three bandings.

myON is a great tool to help ELL (English Language learners) students if schools make reading books apart of their programme. Kids need to read. When we had a student that did not read, their score showed it.

We’re satisfied and we can proudly say last year 69% of students have achieved their reading target. Renaissance solution is able to track each student's progress by administering baseline score tests at the beginning of the year.
